What a choghadiya is
The choghadiya (also written chaughadiya, from chau, four, and ghadi, a 24-minute unit) cut the day from sunrise to sunset into 8 equal parts, and the night from sunset to the next sunrise into 8 more. Each part is about four ghadis long, an hour and a half around the equinoxes, longer by day in summer and by night in winter. Families in Gujarat, Rajasthan and across the diaspora check them before starting a journey, a purchase, a puja or new work.
| Choghadiya | Ruler | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| Amrit | Moon | Auspicious, the best |
| Shubh | Jupiter | Auspicious |
| Labh | Mercury | Auspicious, for gain and trade |
| Char | Venus | Neutral, said to suit travel |
| Rog | Mars | Inauspicious |
| Kaal | Saturn | Inauspicious |
| Udveg | Sun | Inauspicious |
The first choghadiya of the day belongs to the ruler of the weekday (Amrit on Monday, Udveg on Sunday…) and the others follow in that order; the night starts five places further on. Vaar Vela and Kaal Vela mark day choghadiya traditionally avoided for new work (Vaar Vela even when it falls on a good one), and Kaal Ratri marks the night’s Labh.
Rahu Kaal today, Yamaganda and Gulika
Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal are each one eighth of the daytime, at a fixed place for every weekday. They move with sunrise and sunset, so they differ from city to city and through the year. For a day running from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Rahu Kaal falls at:
| Day | Rahu Kaal (6 AM sunrise) |
|---|---|
| Monday | 7:30 – 9:00 AM |
| Tuesday | 3:00 – 4:30 PM |
| Wednesday | 12:00 – 1:30 PM |
| Thursday | 1:30 – 3:00 PM |
| Friday | 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM |
| Saturday | 9:00 – 10:30 AM |
| Sunday | 4:30 – 6:00 PM |
The real times are the ones above for your city. Abhijit muhurat is the eighth of the fifteen muhurtas of the day, around local noon (not observed on Wednesdays); Brahma muhurat is the fourteenth muhurta of the night, ending about 48 minutes before sunrise.
How these times are calculated
This page runs the calculation of the Shubh Samay app itself, compiled for the browser: sunrise and sunset are the moments the upper edge of the Sun meets a flat horizon with standard refraction, the convention of the major printed panchangs. Every time is shown on the chosen city's own clock, daylight saving time included, wherever you are reading from.
The calculation is checked against 1,752 timings published by a panchang (37 days, 7 cities from Chennai to London): all agree within one minute, and 1,671 to the minute. The tithi is the one running at sunrise. These are traditional timings, given for information: no predictions.
